Su carrera musical se inició en plena fiebre de la música disco, con una imagen extremadamente elaborada. Sus primeros managers en el mundo de la música fueron Simon y Eileen Berlin, quienes contrataron al diseñador Richard Berstein (por sugerencia de amigos comunes como Andy Warhol y el agente de prensa John Carmen) para crear impactantes primeros planos que salieron en las portadas de sus primeros sencillos en la firma Beam Junction y los tres primeros álbumes en la Island.
Jones alcanza enormes éxitos en la comunidad gay como su ambiguo I Need A Man. Su marido Jean Paul Goude relató que la vio por primera vez fue cantando Necesito un hombre en una discoteca gay: «Una mujer que parecía un hombre, cantando 'necesito un hombre' para un público enfervorecido de hombres gays».
Grace Jones pronto se vio convertida en una de las figuras centrales de la música disco y firme sucesora de la reina indiscutible del género, Donna Summer. En 1977 grabó su primer álbum, Portfolio, un trabajo orientado hacia la música disco que incluía una particular versión del clásico francés La vie en rose. En 1978 grabó su segundo trabajo, Fame y en poco tiempo logró convertirse en musa de la cultura gay, realizando en 1979 su propio show en directo, Queen of the Gay Discos.
