American Life —en español: Vida estadounidense— es el noveno álbum de estudio de la artista estadounidense Madonna. Fue lanzado el 22 de abril de 2003 por Maverick Records y distribuido por Warner Bros. Records. El álbum fue producido en su totalidad por Madonna y Mirwais Ahmadzaï, mientras que algunas pistas Mark 'Spike' Stent fue co-productor. El álbum presenta varias referencias a muchas partes de la cultura estadounidense. El álbum está considerado como un álbum conceptual con temas recurrentes del sueño americano y materialismo. Además, los temas rechazan la reputación que Madonna tuvo en los años 1980 con su éxito mundial «Material Girl». El álbum está esencialmente compuesto de pop, electrónica, rock y dance-pop, aunque los críticos también notaron influencias de música acústica en canciones como «X-Static Process» y «Intervention». El álbum contiene el tema de James Bond de 2002 «Die Another Day» de la película de mismo nombre.

En los Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido el álbum debutó en la posición número 1. Estuvo nominado a 2 Grammys en los premios Grammy de 2004. El álbum fue el número 32 álbum más vendido en el 2003. La RIAA y la BPI lo certificaron platino por 1 000 000 de copias distribuidas en Estados Unidos y 300 000 en Reino Unido, respectivamente. Según Nielsen SoundScan, hasta octubre de 2012, American Life vendió 680 000 copias en Estados Unidos. Mundialmente ha vendido 4 millones de copias. Es el segundo álbum de Madonna en tener una etiqueta de aviso por contenido explícito para los padres después de Erotica.

Cuatro sencillos fueron lanzados del álbum. El primero, «American Life» fue lanzado con una crítica mixta. Blender la nombró la novena peor canción de todo el tiempo. Un video controversial fue sacado del aire después de que las escenas de guerra y violencia fueron criticadas, lo que llevó a que una versión editada fuera lanzada. La canción alcanzó el número 37 como máxima posición en Estados Unidos, pero en varios lugares alcanzó el top 10, mientras que en el Reino Unido su máxima posición fue la número 2.

La promoción para el álbum tomó lugar en una pequeña gira promocional entre abril y mayo de 2003 antes de que ella llevara a cabo su sexta gira musical, el Re-Invention World Tour. La gira fue dividida en 5 segmentos: French Baroque-Marie Antoinette Revival, Military-Army, Circus-Cabaret, Acoustic y Scottish-Tribal, gananado respuestas positivas, aunque después surgió un poco de controverisa, ya que el cantante Elton John aseguró que ella estaba haciendo playback. La gira fue "chronicled" en un documental llamado I'm Going to Tell You a Secret. También fueron lanzados un CD y DVD con el documental. En los MTV Video Music Awards 2003 Madonna actuó junto a otros artistas: Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera y Missy Elliot en un "medley" de «Like a Virgin» y «Hollywood». Madonna besó en la boca a Spears y Aguilera, generando esto una gran controversia y publicidad.

Considerado el álbum más arriesgado —comercialmente hablando— que ha lanzado Madonna en su carrera, es el segundo material producido junto a Mirwais Ahmadzaï, quien disminuyó la presencia de sonidos electrónicos bailables a cambio de guitarras acústicas, llevando el sonido más allá de Music. Para la portada, en crudo blanco y negro, Madonna apareció como una Che Guevara del siglo XXI con dos franjas sangrando en su ceja, en posición militar. Fue lanzado mundialmente el 22 de abril de 2003 en tres ediciones: explícita, limpia y en una serie especial limitada.

Madonna comenzó a grabar el álbum a principios de 2002 , después de filmar la película Barridos por la marea. La grabación del álbum se terminó en Londres y Los Ángeles a finales de 2002 . Además de Madonna y Ahmadazaï , otros colaboradores en el álbum fueron Monte Pittman, Stuart Price,y los cantautores britanicos Jem Griffiths y Guy Sigsworth.

Para hacer frente a las descargas ilegales de Internet de las canciones del álbum , tanto antes como después del lanzamiento del álbum , de sus socios de Madonna creó una serie de archivos de canciones falsas de similar longitud y tamaño. Algunos de estos archivos pronunció un breve mensaje de Madonna diciendo " ¿Qué coño te crees que estás haciendo? " seguido por minuto de silencio.El hacker que ataco la página web de Madonna agregó un mensaje que aparece en la página principal, diciendo: "Esto es la mierda que creo que estoy haciendo ...," seguido de enlaces de descarga para cada una de las canciones del álbum . El sitio web fue cerrado tras el ataque después unas cuantas horas.

Debido a la controversia de las canciones, el álbum recibió críticas mixtas, más específicamente por el corte «American Life». La filmación del videoclip se hizo en Irak mientras la guerra en el país continuaba, lo que generó un ambiente que los críticos y reporteros lo llamaron antinacionalista. Desafortunadamente, estos eventos le dieron al disco un contexto indeseable, ya que, mientras fue publicado a fines de abril de 2003, los tanques continuaban avanzando por Irak.

En Europa, el disco obtuvo mediana aceptación en países como Reino Unido y Francia. En Estados Unidos, el álbum fue número uno en las listas Billboard 200 y Top Internet Albums; y el único sencillo que se posicionó en Billboard Hot 100 fue «American Life» en la casilla 37. Canadá colocó en el primer puesto al disco en Billboard Top Canadian Albums.

«Die Another Day» formó parte de la banda sonora original para la vigésima película de James Bond; es considerado también el primer sencillo en adelanto al álbum. Los cortes promocionales fueron: «American Life», «Hollywood» y «Love Profusion»; sin embargo, «Nobody Knows Me», «Nothing Fails» y «Mother and Father» también recibieron promoción en los clubes apoyados de múltiples remezclas. Madonna colocó estos sencillos dentro de Billboard Hot Dance/Music Play en donde tres de ellos ocuparon el primer lugar.

Después del Re-Invention Tour, Die Another Day se volvió a interpretar en forma de interludio en la gira "Sticky & Sweet Tour", donde se ve a Madonna en un nuevo video entrenando boxeo; y Nobody Knows Me fue interpretada en The MDNA Tour en forma de interludio.
